In this guide, we will dive deep into the intricacies of setting up plumbing systems in ArchiCAD. The process can seem daunting at first, but with a structured approach, you can master the essentials. This guide is based on practical insights and detailed steps to ensure you can effectively implement plumbing systems in your projects.
Available Resources and Downloadables
Before diving into the process, make sure you download the necessary assets that supplement your project. You can find materials, templates, and the project file used in this demonstration on the Patreon platform. Having these assets will not only save you time but also help you follow along more effectively.

Understanding the Project Setup
The project utilizes the ArchiCAD MSBIM template, which is specifically designed to streamline the setup of various systems, including plumbing. You can download this template.
In our current project, we have already established a sewage and water system, including hot and cold water modules. The only remaining task is to connect the bathtub to the existing plumbing network.
Interface and Tools Overview
To start, we need to configure our workspace correctly. Navigate to Options and select Work Environment. Apply the MMP Engineering Profile (version 24). This profile provides all the necessary tools for pipework and plumbing systems.
Next, we need to bring up the routing palette. Go to Window and then Palettes to find and activate the MMP Routing palette. This tool will be crucial for running our pipelines.
Setting Up the Water Supply System
Our first task is to place the water meter, which will serve as the main connection point for our water supply. Begin by selecting Pipe in Line 2 and ensure you are using the appropriate layers. For our plumbing system, we will use layer D20.
Next, configure the water meter settings. Under the settings, choose the appropriate diameter for the pipes. Typically, the main supply pipe will be larger (30mm), and it will gradually decrease in size as it branches off into the system.
Placing the Water Meter
After adjusting the settings, position the water meter in your desired location. This will be the entry point for water into your plumbing system.
Connecting the Water Supply to the System
With the water meter in place, the next step is to connect the pipework from the meter to the cold water system. Start by selecting the routing tool and set the pipe diameter to 30mm for the main line. Click on the meter to initiate the routing, then drag the line to connect it to the existing system.
Once the pipe is laid out, you may need to adjust its elevation. Use the vertical rise window to set the correct height for your piping. It's often necessary to do some guesswork initially, but you can always make adjustments later.
Adjusting Pipe Thickness and Visualization
If the pipe appears too thick, select it and go back to the settings to adjust the thickness. For a standard setup, a thickness of 5mm is often sufficient. Similarly, ensure that the visualization settings reflect the correct color coding for cold water, which is typically represented in blue.
Connecting to the Cold Water System
Now that we have our main supply line, it's time to connect it to the cold water system. This will require using a T-connector to branch off from the main line. Select the T-connector tool and place it in the appropriate location.
Running the Pipework
Utilize the routing tool again, setting it to a diameter of 20mm this time, as it will connect to the smaller pipe in the cold water system. Ensure that the routing snaps correctly to the existing pipes for a seamless connection.
Handling Pipe Connections and Size Changes
As you connect different sizes of pipes, you will often need to use a reducer or transition tool. This tool allows you to change the diameter from 30mm to 20mm smoothly. Select the transition tool, adjust the settings accordingly, and place it where the two pipe sizes meet.
Finalizing the Setup
After connecting the pipes, check to ensure that all connections are secure. Navigate to the 3D view to visually confirm the layout. If any sections appear misaligned or if there are issues with gradients, use the elevate mode to adjust the pipes as needed.
Common Challenges and Troubleshooting
One of the challenges often faced while working with plumbing systems in ArchiCAD is navigating the interface effectively. If you find that you’re having difficulty with the project moving off-screen while trying to orbit, ensure that you select elements before orbiting.
This will help maintain your focus on the relevant parts of the project. Additionally, if you encounter issues with pipe connections not snapping correctly, double-check the settings for each pipe and ensure that they are compatible.
Conclusion
Setting up plumbing systems in ArchiCAD can be a complex task, but with the right tools and methods, it becomes manageable. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you will be able to create efficient plumbing systems that meet your project needs.
